Imagine a river so polluted that its once-crystal waters now carry the silent threat of runoff from nearby farms. This is the stark reality facing the River Erme, but a groundbreaking project in Devon is fighting back—one tree at a time. The initiative, part of the larger Community Forests program (external: https://englandscommunityforests.org.uk/) and funded by the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra), aims to 'enhance and enrich the environment' by planting trees on Ramsland Farm, which is transitioning to organic practices. But here's where it gets intriguing: even organic farms aren't immune to the runoff problem, as ecologist Robbie Phillips, the project lead, points out. 'Extreme rainfall events, which are increasingly common, can still wash sediment and nutrients into the river,' he explains. 'But these trees act as nature's filters, capturing loose soil, trapping excess nutrients, and ensuring that only clean water reaches the river.' And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about planting trees—it's about planting the right ones. The project includes around 30 species of mostly native trees, alongside 25 different fruit and nut varieties, creating a diverse ecosystem that benefits both the environment and the farm. 'In about 10 years, we could be harvesting walnuts from this land,' Phillips says with a smile.
